We carry authentic Antique rugs and VIntage rugs that are truly one of a kind made all by hand with organic dyes and natural hand-spun wool. These mystical pieces have all been professionally cleaned prior to being listed and ready to use. Our entire collection is carefully curated with an extremely picky and discerning eye that captures the heart and soul of these weavers, and the story they share in their nomadic masterpieces.
Name: BLOOMING MIDNIGHT JUNGLE Antique Rug | Unbelievable Color Palette
Size: 8 x 11.2
Age: Antique C. 1915-1925's
Pile: Low/Medium with nice age-related patina with lots of missing pile throughout (see pic), will be secured all the way around. If you would like us to re-pile all the missing pile, please inquire and we can discuss that.
About: ABSOLUTE Diamond wrapped in Organic Sheep's wool dunked and dyed in natural vegetable dyes from the gardens. You will not see the number of organic shifts and striations of abrash (natural variation in dye due to the small-batch dye process of wool) which unfolds in from of the weaver's eyes right in front of them as they're weaving. If they run out of one shade of blue, they go to the next closest shade and continue weaving rather than stopping to wait and dye another batch the same hue as the previous. This is what the human element in rug weaving is all about. These are the elements that make such an art authentic, as well as interesting. The dancing vines grow throughout this piece as if they're being watered and stretching for the sun - every branch, vine, and twig reaches its full potential as they form a structure to the entirety of the piece. In this structure, just as in nature, there is the growth of leaves, flora, and smaller twigs growing to create a very nice complexity for the eye. The designs of these weavers are always inspired by nature, this, in addition to the color choices they make creates an effect that is hard to replicate, and once you've seen it it is impossible to unsee. It is like watching a miracle right in front of your eyes, except this miracle was woven a century ago! Lots of nice characteristics in this piece, including the iconic northwest mountainous border with the jagged leaves surrounding the round palmette - however, what makes this border unique is that this pattern is contained inside of a hexagon motif that adds great masculinity and a strong "round" shape to contrast it's very linear field design. There is a fantastic jagged leaf design that looks like a feather - you will note several of these as it is hard not to notice their powerful presence - this is a wonderful motif and we associate them with the Native Americans of North America, but these natives were just as nomadic as the villagers and tribespeople of the middle east - possibly and probably they both used these feather shapes on their arrows as they hunted for food - it is a very symbolic and fundamental/primitive symbol of the nomads of the world. The colors in this piece are next level - never again will you see this smokey charcoal-like midnight blue-black band of abrash that shreds through the middle of this carpet. It adds such a nice break for the eyes as we get lost inside this blooming jungle design. TONS of blue hues, soft blush, salmon, pinks, rich handsome reds, caramel, camel, mocha, espresso, inky blue-black, indigo, navy, oxford blue, grassy green, olive green, army green, rust, earthy antique beige, soft sky blue, peacock blue, and more. Every color in the crayon box, yet so sophisticated in its presentation. Nothing is overwhelming, nothing is too loud, nothing is too strong - it is just right and delivered to us in a very easy and digestible way for the eye to drink up. The condition of this piece is good for its age - it has some age-related wear as if it was used in the very mountains it was woven in. Nice rugged feel but still nice soft and strong wool. There are areas of this piece where the pile is missing with some distress and even threadbare areas - these areas can easily be re-piled if the buyer wanted - just let us know and we can give you a quote (around $1000-1500 or so to get done expertly by master weavers). Let us know you're interested in that and we can have it done for you - otherwise, if you're into exposed brick, huge raw beams in the ceiling, and distressed patina on old leather chairs and hand-carved wooden benches and tables - then maybe forgo the restoration and enjoy this piece in its original and untouched state. Rest assured all the fringe and bindings can be secured for you to prevent from unraveling, while still keeping its age-old look. If you love true antique tribal rugs, this is one of the most beautiful, unique, and most sought-after pieces in the market from past to present. A TRUE piece of ART.
This rug is one-of-a-kind, only one in the world, no others are available.
Because of the nature and age of these older/antique handmade pieces, irregularities and age-related wear are likely to exist and are not considered defects.
Any questions about this rug? Don't hesitate to reach out!
We always recommend a high-quality custom cut pad for any and all rugs; these pads are made for hand-knotted rugs. They create a body and support the knots of the rug, as well as prevent it from slipping and sliding.
A note from us to you: Buying a rug is special; it's not just you finding the rug, but also the rug finding you. Think about the many coincidences that have to occur for you to find the rug of your dreams. Our rugs are woven by nomads in the villages and remote mountainous regions of the major rug weaving districts across the world. All of our rugs are genuinely old and one-of-a-kind. Like anything old and unique, they are filled with character, soul, and story. The story of a rug is something we think about a lot; who was the weaver(s)? Did they weave it for personal use, commerce, to gift, or trade? Who was the second owner, and the third!? Sometimes the little motifs and symbols in rugs can help tell the story, but we will never truly know - there's something beautiful about that. Alas, our joy is to curate these incredible pieces that speak to us, and to pass them along to their new owners to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come; both continuing to add to the story of the rug, and to the story of the new owners.
