Combining painting and sculpture into unique fiber art

Susan Maddux is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work combines painting and sculpture into unique forms.

She was born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii to a hapa Japanese-American family. Growing up in the Islands she absorbed the influence of Japanese folk art traditions and Buddhist temples and the arts of Oceania in the crossroads of the Pacific.

She brings her early experiences in the lush valleys of Hawaii, vibrant colors and reverence for nature and the spirit world to bear on her painted sculptural works. Each piece is made of individual acrylic paintings on canvas folded to conceal, reveal and transform the materials.
Deeply feminine in nature, these pieces connect with the viewer viscerally through form and color.

Grounded to the earth and at the same time weightless and ethereal, this work is created through a deeply intuitive process. This process embraces flexibility and is sensitive to the proximity of nature and the urban environment in the surrounding areas. The result is a unique collection of abstract forms referencing elements of body / figure and landscape, totem and terrestrial excavation.

Susan has a Bachelor of fine arts in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, she has had numerous group and solo shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Honolulu.
