'Breathing Room' is a bold gestural artwork that commands one's attention immediately upon entering the room.
Whereas much of Newman's work tends to utilize every square inch of the canvas, the artist intentionally left 'pockets' of quieter space behind, evident in the white at the bottom and top of the picture. These resting places for the eye provide a brilliant contrast allowing the more chaotic brushwork and lush textures to come forward. Hence the title 'Breathing Room.'
Although this artwork is not explicitly figurative, the organic quality of paint application is highly evocative of the human form. Lines twist and curve throughout, before giving way to biomorphic masses of impasto paint. 'Breathing Room' is a work of art in a constant state of flux, hanging in a delicate balance between that which is trying to emerge, and collapsing back in on itself.
