This was a custom commission I made during winter months to be hung in a hospital in Texas. Sword ferns are very much in season in the wet winter months here in Northern California, so they are an excellent choice to request for a botanical commission after October has passed and it is not yet summer. Lots of trees lose their leaves in winter and most flowers prefer to bloom in spring and summer.
Though this monotype of multiple shades of blue looks like a screen print, it is actually a nineteenth century method of photography called a cyanotype, "cyan" meaning blue in Greek.
Every botanical print is entirely unique made using fresh cut branches laid in that exact composition on the hand-coated light-sensitive paper only once. My botanical cyanotypes are each one-of-a-kind slow cameraless photographs made outdoors using natural sunlight. There is no lens, no plastic photo negative, no ink, etched plate, carved block or printing press.
