New York, NY

"Art, Collage, Collage Realism, Mixed Media, Multimedia, Conceptual Art"
Steven Rudin creates hand-cut paper collages that celebrate subjective reality with an emphasis on optimism and nostalgia. Visually, he explores the optics of memory, producing an image that is somewhere between a painting and a photograph. His inspiration comes from the fusion of portraiture, textiles, architecture, and gardens from multiple eras and different cultures.

More About This Creator

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"I teach a method of creating collage at the Art Students League of New York called ODRA (Observation, Deconstruction, Rehearsal, Assembly). Through this meticulous process, collage can teach us about our inner wisdom, drives, wishes, and dreams. People grasp this concept from looking at my work and feel compelled to create their own art. I know that people carry my imagery inside their imagination and want to apply it to their own lives."

Q&A

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"People often marvel at my ability to create depth of perspective. I know that my work is successful when the viewer pauses to take a closer look. In a world bursting with digital images, getting someone to stop and notice the finer details of a piece of artwork is quite a feat. By presenting familiar images in a new way, the viewer feels intimacy and novelty at the same time, which is something we are all seeking."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"Children can be my best critics. I love to hear what they have to say about my work. In a way, by elevating cut and paste to a fine artform, I am speaking to the child part in all of us."
