Dave Caudill creates artworks for public, corporate and private collections. His larger public works are found at Louisiana’s Rip Van Winkle Gardens, East Tennessee’s Horizon Center park, the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center for the Arts and the University of Louisville School of Music. He is also one of the few sculptors in the world who have created an environmental undersea sculpture. Caudill’s artwork was placed on the seabed near Nassau, The Bahamas. How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?
"For the larger stainless and small bronze pieces, I prefer to work spontaneously in my studio. Sometimes they come together like magic, other times I pull my hair out. I can build a model, but the discovery that comes with improvisation is more fun."

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?
"I hope people will be curious and explore it from many angles. I like to lie on my back and look up – I call this the child’s-eye view. When we were young the whole world invited us to imagine and discover. Blue-sky thinking is such an important component of creativity. Picasso said “It takes years to become child-like.” Nurturing our intuition is critical to both our survival and happiness."

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?
"I once built two sculptural handrails for a client and he surprised me with one of the finest compliments I’ve received: “When I use regular handrails, I think of my physical problems, but when I use Dave’s, I think of the beauty of art in my life.”"
