"Chaos Lighting"
Ashoke Chhabra has been a furniture designer /maker for over twenty years. His work has been exhibited across the US including 2 consecutive years as a finalist at the Innovation + Design show held in North Carolina by the International Society of Furniture Designers. In 2019 a prototype of the work with which he is now engaged won 1st prize at an exhibit held at the Wharton Esherick Museum in PA. Since then he has both refined the designs and process involved in their fabrication.

He refers to his new line of work as the “Chaos Series,” so named for the initial impression one gets upon viewing. There is however order at play, a pattern that repeats in both ascending and descending intervals. The result is a growing number of compelling forms each of which is constructed from a building block of the same design. Only the scale of each is allowed to vary. These are stacked up, twisted, or reversed in many cases, all depending on the form he is after. The one begets the creation of the next. His efforts to this end are ever expanding, evolving, and go to show what can be achieved when a single motif is exploited with artist intent.

At present all work is constructed of 17 ply Baltic Birch Plywood, an extremely robust and stable wood product. Moreover the material has a modern and unfussy aspect that compliment the jagged and complex forms perfectly. Overall the pallet is kept light so as to compliment a modern environment in which artifice is kept to a minimum, offering the right amount of “Pop” to a space without the desire to overwhelm.
