This mural was done to honor the employees of 1951 Coffee. Their portraits are painted on the wall to honor the message and goals of the company.
1951 Coffee Company, founded in 2015, is a non-profit specialty coffee organization that promotes the well-being of the refugee community in the United States by providing job training and employment to refugees, asylees, and special immigrant visa holders while educating the surrounding community about refugee life and issues.
Their name derives from the year in which the UNHCR, at the 1951 Refugee Convention, first defined and set forth guidelines for the protection of refugees. These protections were further expanded in the 1967 Protocols giving the UNHCR a global mandate.
In the spirit of these conventions 1951 Coffee Company was founded to address the unique challenges recently resettled refugees, asylees, and special immigrant visa holders face upon starting their new lives in the U.S. 1951 assists refugees in training for and attaining dignified, living-wage jobs that concurrently provide social, linguistic, and cultural orientation to their new U.S. community.
